January is is a a a a a a a a time in in in the the the Church when we traditionally think of of of of travellers - the the the the the wise men from afar seeking the the the the the child who has been born King of of of of the the the the the Jews we think of of of of the the the the the flight of of of of the the the the Holy Family to to Egypt as as refugees and realise that at at some point when danger is is over they return to to Nazareth In our family we we often plan or dream of of holidays places far away that we we long to to to visit and January used to to to be be the the month when the the the dream could start to to to become become real But travel abroad has become become a a a a a a a a a a a nightmare in these COVID times with tests tests tests and and and forms forms before before you you you go tests tests tests and and and forms forms before before you you you come come back back and and and tests tests tests after you you you come come back back I have had the privilege of travel recently with a a a a a a trip to to to Herrnhut that involved flying into into into Prague so forms forms to to to to to to get get into into into into the the the the the Czechia and then then forms forms forms to to to to to to to to get get get into into into into Germany then then forms forms forms to to to to to to get get back into into into the the the the the the UK: the the the the the the passenger locator form form form form form This form form form form is is much more more complicated than the the the the forms forms used by other countries and and takes an an an an age to to do Sadly even more more recently we travelled to to the the the Netherlands for for for for a a a a a a a a a a a a family funeral More tests and and and and forms before before you you fly and and and and before before you you return! But it had had been a a a a a a a a a a a a difficult few days and and and and we had had forgotten to to to to fill in the passenger locator form on on our return and and as as as a a a a a a a a a a a a a consequence was to to to to to to experience what some visitors sadly have to to to face on on entry to to to the UK We waited in in in the the airport in in in what appeared to to be an unheated tin shed to to to approach the the the British Border Force who were were there to to to check our our our documentation Of course our our our lack of paperwork was discovered and we we we were were sent to to wait until everyone else had cleared through the the immigration queue However the the senior official was officious
and and condescending to everyone everyone who approached him and and we we could hear everyone's business being discussed Most of the the men who approached him were obviously sailors coming to to join local ships - but what a a a a a a welcome to to the the the UK for them We waiting wearily were with one other person: a a a a a a a traveller who like us us had no paperwork but he he was going to to to be shipped off to to to a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a quarantine hotel He told us us a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a bit about his his travels and that he he had been away with a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a charity When we left sometime later this poor man was still cold after waiting so so long and his his transportation would be delayed even further as the the van had broken down Of course there there are are necessary procedures for for checking for for the the the correct paperwork but there there are are more courteous ways of doing that that that All I can say is is is that that that we we learn learn from from our our our mistakes - we we we certainly learnt something from from our our mistake: that that that that the welcome that that visitors get coming coming into this country can be anything but friendly helpful and welcoming That day I was ashamed to be British The face we we show to the weary traveller Welcome is at the the the heart of the the the gospel a a a a a a welcome welcome welcome for for for the the the the the stranger a a a a a a welcome welcome welcome for for for for the the the lonely a a a a a a a a welcome welcome welcome welcome for for for for the the the cold weary traveller a a a a a a welcome welcome for for for us us all Let us us try this new year to be welcoming and and compassionate in in in all our our personal dealings and and work to make our our institutions more humane for those who come face face to face face with them in in their time of need Sr Sarah Groves
